A Natural Life

June 2, 2020 By Philip Barton

Tuesday

The Hippies, and their Progressive, Green descendants, live with the belief that people would be better served by reverting to a life more attuned to nature.

Let me break this to them gently, it’s complete BS.  There is no glorious natural Nirvana waiting to be rediscovered.  There never was; it never existed.  Nature just is what it is – harsh, cruel, poisonous and unforgiving.  Amongst its many beauties and bounties, there co-exists a blank indifference to human needs, wants and safety.

The impulse of decent people, of civilized people, is to tame nature, to bend it, twist it and re-form it so that it better conforms to our needs.  The alternative is shivering in a cave, placidly suffering from hunger and disease.  Nature’s aesthetic heights and natural foods do not adequately compensate for its shortfalls – fierce animals and ghastly diseases that seek to destroy us.

A natural life is one that is short, harsh and brutal.  It is at the opposite end of the spectrum to the civilized life that civilized people aspire to.

More coffee anyone?
