This excellent article by Joakim Book points out that comparisons of the present to ‘Brave New World’ and ‘1984’ are probably less pertinent than comparisons with the non-fictional fin de siecle of Vienna.
It should also be pointed out that Vienna never recovered – the Habsburg Empire collapsed and Austria dwindled into permanent mediocrity. Civilizations never do recover. Egypt, Mali, Greece, Rome, England – once the rot sets it seems that it cannot be arrested. The decline is permanent.
