“Everything the government touches turns to shit.” Ringo Starr
(Still my favourite quote of the 20th century)
Mr Starr admirably summed up the pernicious effect of government upon a society; any society. Even the US, with its admirable Constitution, which was the envy of civilized people from all over the world, has now succumbed.
No system of government, no matter how carefully and legally restrained and restricted, can withstand forever the assault of those who drool at the idea of having the power to spend their lives telling other people how to live theirs.
The undercurrent of this Blog, beneath even Gold, is that the history of the world is one of people building civilizations and governments destroying them. The withdrawal of Gold from circulation is one way, the best way, of destroying civilization.
As political power has become concentrated in the hands of unscrupulous charlatans and as the power bases have become ever-larger, so they lust for the ultimate. As the UK’s Prime Ministerial sleazebag Bumbling Boris Johnson so aptly put it “I want to be king of the world”. Fortunately, Boris will not achieve his wet dream and will have to be mollified with fondling his child bride.
However, others are better positioned, or so they believe. Xi Jinping, the faceless bureaucrats in the EU and China Joe amongst them.
But we must not forget Mr. Starr’s quote. It is not just that everything that governments touch turns to shit; it is that what they achieve is always, invariably, exactly the opposite of what they set out to achieve. How’s the War on Poverty going?
War on Cancer?
War on Homelessness?
But here is where it gets interesting. The machinations to increase the power bases, to aggregate countries into ever-larger State behemoths, is creating the opposite. Instead of a One World Government, the world is beginning to fragment into its almost forgotten constituent parts.
The United Kingdom is breaking down. Scotland and Northern Ireland both want out. If/when they are successful, Wales will also want out. Will Cornwall want its independence again? It goes without saying that the average Englishman would love to be shot of them all.
In the US, it is hard to see a peaceful compromise between the violent hard left socialists who have seized power and normal Americans who aren’t obsessed with the colour of people’s skin and who value freedom and decency. Some sort of secession must be a very real possibility now that both the Supreme Court and the military seem to have abdicated their responsibilities to the Constitution.
The European Union has created growing disunity amongst its member states. The UK has already gone, Italy is looking likely to go next. Others will follow, but below that level are other secessionist rumblings. Spain, Belgium, France and others have internal secessionist movements.
Around the world, ever-larger governments have brought nothing but misery for ‘their’ people. The backlash will continue to grow and high octane fuel will be added to the fire of all the secessionist movements by the coming worldwide depression. Keep an eye on West Australia.
Hopefully some of the future mini-nation States will value and adopt the principles enshrined in the US Constitution. I’m not holding my breath.
