The wonderful old American saying that you cannot multiply wealth by dividing it, tells only half the story.
The wealth of the productive that is redistributed to be squandered by the unproductive is exactly equal to the amount that is no longer available to be used to finance the expansion of existing businesses or the building of new businesses. It is upon the foundation of capital that future wealth is built.
Redistribution also creates the disincentive of knowing that if your profits are going to be confiscated by The State, then why bother working your butt off and risking capital in the first place?
So, the other half of the story is that while you cannot multiply wealth by dividing it, you can, by dividing it, greatly impede the multiplication of it.
Eventually, as under socialism, the redistribution of wealth results in the destruction of more capital than is being created. That is the path to economic collapse. Unconstrained government is the path to national ruin.
People build civilizations; governments destroy them.
