Unfortunately, there was no vantage point that came anywhere close to showing the true size of the crowd in Canberra yesterday. I have included the link below because it showed better than my feeble camera work the extent of the crowd.
It was massive. I use the Melbourne Cricket Ground, with which I am familiar, to assess, as best I can, demonstration sizes. This was, very conservatively, 250,000 people. I heard 500,000 and would not argue with that. The media claim? … up to 10,000 people!
It was wholly peaceful and friendly with the crowd composed of a lot of families. It was most heartening to be able to walk in a sea of people and be greeted and greet all others with a smile and a chat. I have never ever been a part of such a wonderful group of people – hundreds of thousands of them. It restored my faith in the innate greatness of the Australian culture.
Friendly-Power! Despite the media beat up, there were only six police at the critical point outside parliament and they were not needed before a good-natured people just expressing their concerns about the most important issue of our day.
We met people from all over Australia. One car load had driven down from the Gulf of Carpenteria – about 3,000ks. I spoke with Jacob from Lightning Ridge. These people put in a lot of petrol money and time to make their feelings clear. One group had come from Western Australia to participate; they knew when they left that it was an all or nothing trip as they would not be able to return through the closed to all inbound traffic border.
Yes, Australia is still a great country; the ratbags that cloud our perceptions are mostly in parliament and the media.
In amongst them is the Prime Minister of Australia, Scott Morrison, furiously back-pedalling and pretending that this is the fault of the State Premiers. It was Morrison who okayed the destruction of businesses and lives and Morrison who will wear the consequences at the election in May.
Morrison, you are the vilest PM that this country has ever had.
You are a disgrace to the parliament, to the flag and to the people of Australia.
Good riddance you ratbag.
