1949
The nationalist army of the Kuomintang (KMT) had exhausted itself fighting the Japanese. The KMT retreated to Formosa (Taiwan).
Mao Tse-tung (Mao Zedung) marched triumphantly into power at the head of the Red Army who had been biding their time in the hills.
The communists seized control of the country. The economy became centrally planned with the result of mass starvation.
1978
Mao died and Deng Xiaoping assumed control of ‘The Party’. Deng began the long process of loosening control of the economy. As more and more controls were lifted, so China became more and more prosperous.
2013
Xi Jinping assumed control of ‘The Party’ and began restoring top-down control of the economy. The economy began its slow implosion.
2024
The economy and currency is in full on collapse and, because of that, Xi has vowed to ‘deepen control’.
August 2024
Rumours abound that Xi has had a stroke and has died. I stress that these are rumours; it could be just ‘wishful thinking’. Irrespective of that…
