Today, Tuesday, November 5th is the big day.
First of all, and most importantly, it is the day that celebrates Guy Fawkes who famously rowed under parliament with a boat full of gunpowder. He was intent upon blowing it up, but sadly was captured.
He is honoured in the U.K. by the annual celebration of Fireworks Day (A.K.A. Bonfire Night) and is remembered as the only man who ever went into parliament with honest intentions.
Second, it is the day of the Melbourne Cup. The most famous horse race in the world. I was on the way to Australia in 1965 when it was being run. The ship was electrified by the excitement of the event. I bet on a trainer called Bart Cummings who had three horses in the race. The only reason that I picked him was because he came from South Australia where I was headed. They came first (Light Fingers), second and fourth – all of which paid. A memory that brings a smile to my face.
Third, now what was the third one? Oh yes, it’s the U.S. presidential election. Trump is going to thrash Harris and will, again, by hook or by crook, be denied the right to govern.
